Roma beat Celtic at SkyDome
Tough times for Celtic

TORONTO (CP) - Francesco Totti looks ready to put a difficult summer behind him. Totti's first-half goal proved to be the winner as AS Roma blanked Celtic 1-0 at  SkyDome on Saturday.
"He played great," Roma manager Cesare Prandelli said through a translator. "He's about 50 per cent right now but he keeps improving all the time and he's one of the  better players that there is.
"Physically he's about 50 per cent, but his heart is big and he plays with 100 per cent."
Totti received a mixture of cheers and boos in the pre-game introductions, no doubt because of the three-match suspension he received at the 2004 European
Championships after spitting in the face of Denmark's Christian Poulsen.
Without the 27-year-old striker, the Italians crashed out of the tournament in the group stage, winning just once in three matches.
After 40,078 showed up to watch FC Porto beat Liverpool on Friday night, attendance swelled to 50,168 at an open SkyDome on Saturday. It's the largest crowd to see a soccer game at SkyDome.
Even if the large crowd wasn't entirely behind him, Totti was clearly the most entertaining player on the field in the first half, showing off his fancy footwork and clever
passing skills at every touch of the ball, a performance that earned him Man of the Match honours.
"Totti has a fantastic reputation," said Celtic manager Martin O'Neill.
Indeed, it was Totti who scored the game's only goal in the 25th minute. The play began with a run down the right side by Gaetano D'Agostino. His cross to the far side of
the penalty area found Totti, who headed over a leaping David Marshall to give Roma a 1-0 lead.
Celtic's 19-year-old goalkeeper was nearly beaten by the same duo just two minutes later, but Totti's first touch was too strong, allowing a sprawling Marshall to gather up
the loose ball.
In addition to Totti, Roma's starting 11 included Italian defender Cristian Panucci, French midfielder Olivier Dacourt and Greek fullback Traianos Dellas.
As for Celtic, the defending Scottish champions presented a quality line-up that included Northern Ireland international Neil Lennon, top defender Bobo Balde and former
England international Chris Sutton.
Roma came close to scoring again in the 32nd minute, when D'Agostino's curling free kick from 25 metres out glanced off the left post.
Meanwhile, Celtic struggled to get a sniff of goal at the other end as Roma's back four of Panucci, Dellas, Philippe Mexes and Leandro Curfe kept the 18-yard box clear.
The Hoops finally threatened in the closing minutes of the first half. Aiden McGeady's found Sutton with a cross in the 42nd minute, but Roma goalkeeper Carlo Zotti tipped the ball over the crossbar.
In the 45th minute, Zotti was in the right place again when John Hartson got his head on a McGeady free kick. The ball fell to a wide open Balde, who shot wide despite
having an open goal in front of him.
"Balde is not exactly noted for finishing off two-yard chances," O'Neill remarked dryly. "When I saw that it had fallen to him, I wasn't actually sure that he'd put it in and he
proved me right. If he can keep them out at the other end for us during the season I'll be incredibly pleased."
Celtic, who saw Swedish international striker Henrik Larsson leave for Barcelona over the summer, scored just four times in the four matches. O'Neill has been looking for
extra firepower and recently acquired Senegalese striker Henri Camara on a season-long loan from Wolves.
"Obviously every team would miss a player of Henrik's calibre and it will be hard to replace him but I think we've got really good strikers," said Celtic defender Ulrik
Laursen.
Neither team made any halftime substitutions, but O'Neill made three changes in the 62nd minute, replacing Sutton with up-and-coming striker Craig Beattie, who had
scored four goals in Celtic's first three games on the tour.
Prandelli also made a pair of second half changes, removing D'Agostino and Marco Del Vecchio in the 64th minute in favour of Maurizio Lanzaro and Vincenzo Montella.
Despite Beattie's best efforts, it was fellow substitute Mohamed Sylla who provided Celtic's best chances to equalize, heading a McGeady free kick over the bar.
Celtic were awarded a late free kick on the edge of the Roma box after Lanzaro's foul on Stanislav Varga, but the shot was blasted directly into the wall.
With just seconds to go in injury time, Sylla sent in near-perfect cross in to Stephen Pearson, whose shot sailed over the crossbar.
Celtic supporters seemed to be in the majority, but fans of both teams were in full voice throughout the evening.
A Celtic supporter and two Roma fans ran onto the field from opposite corners in the 89th minute. The Celtic fan was tackled by security, while the Roma fans jumped back into the seats, where they were chased down by stadium officials.
Saturday's victory was the second of three ChampionsWorld matches for Roma, who lost 3-0 to Chelsea on Wednesday. The Serie A side will conclude their tour against
Liverpool at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Tuesday.
It was Celtic's final game in the ChampionsWorld series, a hectic schedule that saw them play four times in eight days. They lost 4-2 to Chelsea in the series opener and
suffered a 5-1 defeat to Liverpool before rebounding with a 2-1 victory over Manchester United.
O'Neill declared himself happy with what he had seen from his younger players on the tour.
"Despite the travelling that we had to Seattle and the heavy fixtures that we had, overall I'm very pleased," he said. "We've played the games now, we're pretty tired and
we're going home."
Notes: The officiating crew included female linesman Denise Robinson. . . . Combined attendance for the two games at SkyDome was 90,246. . . . Workers began tearing
up the temporary grass surface after the game to get SkyDome ready for Monday's Toronto Blue Jays game at 1:05 p.m. against the Cleveland Indians.
